Vine Whip offers a wide close-range strike and 25% less damage received while melee is active. Water Gun keeps distance and pierces aligned enemies; Razor Leaf can hit on its return. Choose melee if you can work around pack edges, ranged if you need more separation, and keep an open escape route in either case.

AttackDamage / cooldownEffect and limit
Vine Whip19 / 0.62 sRadius 85, arc 1.3 rad (74.5°); one hit per target per cast.
Water Gun14 / 0.44 sEarly line clearing: one pierce from level 1; aim a pack along its path.
Razor Leaf10 / 0.9 sCrowds on both legs; each boomerang can contact a target twice, not every enemy twice.

What the melee bonuses do not do

Catalog melee values already include damage ×1.2 and radius ×1.25, rounded during initialization; do not multiply the displayed Vine Whip values a second time. Active melee reduction is not permission to remain inside multiple zones. Arceus’ light damage ignores defense. Ranged shots can miss moving enemies or be blocked by walls, and Choice Band prevents a fallback switch.
